2010 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Conduct research on germplasm conservation and evaluation relevant to the mission of the National Clonal Germplasm Repository, Davis, CA.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Research pertinent to Repository operations will be conducted: 1)Methodology for the conservation of genetic resources of special interest to the NCGR, Davis; 2)Development of morphological, biochemical, and molecular markers for use in identification, monitoring, and characterizing NCGR, Davis, collections; 3)Development of specific methods to establish and maintain disease-free stocks in the NCGR, Davis; 4)Regeneration of clonal materials for distribution to users; 5)Identification, screening, and collection of new materials important or useful to the NCGR, Davis collections; and 6)Other research areas that are important to the mission of the NCGR, Davis. 3.Progress Report

The USDA and UCD collaborate on genetic resources conservation at the National Clonal Germplasm Respository (NCGR/D) on the Davis Campus. The USDA provides funds to UCD researchers to support projects relevant to the needs of the Repository. By FY 2010, the funds accumulated to $40,000. A request for proposals was circulated to UCDavis faculty on May 4, 2010 for research July 1, 2010-December 31, 2011. It was specified that budgets not exceed $10,000 for research during this period. The repository has national conservation responsibility for the following crops and their wild relatives: Actinidia (kiwi), Diospyros (persimmon), Ficus (fig), Juglans (walnut), Olea (olive), Morus (mulberry), Pistacia (pistachio), Prunus (almond, apricot, cherry, peach, plum), Punica (pomegranate), and Vitis (grape). With respect to the above species groups, relevant research was directed on topics including (a) methodology for conservation of genetic resources, (b) development of morphological, biochemical, and molecular markers for identifying, monitoring, and characterizing genetic resources, (c) development of methods to establish and maintain disease-free plant materials, (d) regeneration methods, (e) collection and documentation of genetic resources needed for California and US agriculture, and (f) other topics important to the mission of the NCGR/D. Eight proposals were received for a total of $80,000. These have been sent out for review. Two reviews have been received as of this writing. The final selections have not been made. The ADODR monitors this SCA by maintaining a complete file of the agreement, reviewing the annual reports, and conducting meetings with the cooperator during the course of the agreement.
