Develop and deliver irrigation scheduling tools and training to Mississippi producers for irrigation scheduling of crop production.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
An irrigation decision support system will be developed and delivered to producers in Mississippi. The irrigation decision will be based on calculations of crop water use from weather data from weather stations throughout Mississippi and other publically available agricultural databases. Other data on farm and soil will be utilized to develop site specific irrigation scheduling recommendations. The irrigation decision support system will be delivered to producers in Mississippi through an easy to use and readily accessible format. Training materials will be developed and presented to producers through on-site training and other standard Extension mechanisms.
Meetings were held to discuss the calculations needed for the irrigation scheduler. All inputs to the model were described, and potential nationally available databases identified. Soils information will be extracted from the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) SURGO soils database. Predominant soil type within a field will be used to calculated soil available moisture and runoff. Weather information will be downloaded from the Mississippi State Weather Center. Calculation of evapotranspiration will be performed based on the best method as identified in supporting research, and the weather information. Organization of user input data will be based on georeference data from the Farm Service Agency, with information on irrigation wells and water sources imported from regional water management districts, as available. The graphic user interface is being developed, and will be linked to the national databases and calculation tools for web-based delivery of water needs by field location. Farmer cooperators have been identified, and will work closely with the development team for input formats and initial testing. The project was monitored through emails, telephone calls, and site visits.
