Research Project: DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY OF IRRIGATION SCHEDULING TOOLS FOR MISSISSIPPI PRODUCERS

2011 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Develop and deliver irrigation scheduling tools and training to Mississippi producers for irrigation scheduling of crop production.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
An irrigation decision support system will be developed and delivered to producers in Mississippi. The irrigation decision will be based on calculations of crop water use from weather data from weather stations throughout Mississippi and other publically available agricultural databases. Other data on farm and soil will be utilized to develop site specific irrigation scheduling recommendations. The irrigation decision support system will be delivered to producers in Mississippi through an easy to use and readily accessible format. Training materials will be developed and presented to producers through on-site training and other standard Extension mechanisms.


3.Progress Report

Geosystems Research Institute (GRI) of Mississippi State University translated the Turc evapotranspiration model from a spreadsheet to a C# program and integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) web server environment capable of managing a database and delivering a mapping interface. An automated polling system has been developed to check for updated meteorological data on the server of the U.S. Weather Service. New data is downloaded, unpacked, projected into the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 15 North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) map coordinate system, interpolated at a 100 meter resolution and clipped to Areas of Interest (AOIs). AOIs correspond to farm field boundaries of participating producers. Processed data is delivered to a database management system on the GRI server, along with inputs provided by producers. The AOIs are spatially related to irrigation wells supporting the specified AOI (farm field). A database has been developed to manage meteorological and producer data for each AOI established. The daily meteorological data and inputs from the producers will be processed by the irrigation scheduling model on the server. The software product under development on the web server is based on Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI’s) ArcGIS Server. Customized programming of the web interface and data processing utilizes ESRI’s ArcObjects libraries. Regular meetings are held with participants to exchange information, identify data needs, develop the web-based tools, and plan future research. Information exchange also occurs through e-mail and phone conversations.
