Research Project: SUPPORT OF THE NATIONAL HERB GARDEN INTERNSHIP

Location: Gardens Unit

Project Number: 1230-21000-135-01
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: May 29, 2009
End Date: May 28, 2014

Objective:
The objective of this service agreement is to allow the Herb Society of America (HSA) to provide funds to ARS so an intern may be hired to support the operation of the National Herb Garden at the U.S. National Arboretum (USNA) and to allow HSA financial contribution toward maintenance and development of the National Herb Garden and its programs if funds are available.

Approach:
The intern involved in support of the National Herb Garden conducts a variety of gardening and other maintenance tasks such as watering, weeding, mowing, mulching, deadheading, fertilizing, and pruning. The intern is also involved in support of the educational and display functions of the National Herb Garden in assisting with the development of educational posters and displays as well as educational programs. The intern also assists in the collection and entry of plant accession data. Aside from assistance in funding the intern, HSA has partnered with the USNA in the development and maintenance of the National Herb Garden and its programs.
