Research Project: PRRS HOST GENETICS CONSORTIUM: A PROPOSAL TO DEVELOP A CONSORTIUM TO STUDY THE ROLE OF HOST GENETICS AND RESISTANCE TO PRRSV Project Number: 1265-32000-088-11
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Aug 15, 2009
End Date: Aug 15, 2010

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to assess the genetic basis of pig responses to porcine respiratory and the reproductive syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection, an infection which causes pneumonia and growth retardation in pigs, affecting the respiratory mucosa.

Approach:
The plan is to use a Nursery Pig Model to assess pig resistance/susceptibility to primary PRRSV infection. The infection and sample collection from pigs will be conducted at Kansas State in an approved animal facility. Samples will be sent to BARC for testing of serum cytokine responses and for DNA preparations for later genotyping. The BARC funding will cover testing for serum interferon-gamma and interleukin-8 cytokine levels, DNA preparations, and for sample cataloguing and data management.
