Research Project: Demonstration of Mebr Alternatives Plus Herbicides for Broad-Spectrum Pest Control in Open-Field Nurseries

Location: Water Management Research

2010 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To evaluate herbicide and fumigant combinations for broad spectrum pest control in open-field production of perennial (tree, vine, and ornamental) nursery stock in the absence of methyl bromide and transfer knowledge to stakeholders via a cooperative extension program.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Field research and demonstration plots will be established in commercial nurseries in the Central Valley of California. Data on control of weeds, nematodes, and soil pathogens of economic or regulatory importance to the tree, vine, and ornamental nursery industry will be evaluated by ARS and UC personnel. Technology transfer efforts to facilitate adoption of methyl bromide alternative pest control strategies will be conducted in cooperation with research and extension faculty and support personnel at the University of California, Davis. Documents SCA with UC Davis.

3.Progress Report

This agreement is in support of Objective 4 of the in-house project. In fall 2009, large-scale fumigant demonstration experiments were established in cooperation with two commercial tree nurseries. Planning is underway for the establishment of two additional experiments near the end of FY2011. In each trial, data on rootstock establishment, early tree growth, scion budding success, and hand-weeding time is being collected by UC, ARS, and nursery personnel. The duration of each experiment will be approximately 14 months; therefore final data will not be available until FY2011 and FY2012, respectively. This project is monitored by regular site visits and regular conference calls between the ADODR and the University investigators on this project.
