To determine malting quality and metabolic profiles of winter barley germplasm segregating for both winter hardiness and malting quality with the ultimate goal of developing winter hardy barley cultivars with sufficient malt quality to receive recommendation for malting by the approriate trade organization.

Micromalts will be generated following standard procedures to resulting in modification levels comparable to those obtained under commercial conditions.
Methods of extraction, gas chromatographic separation, and analyte identification via mass spectrometer have been optimized for cereal vegetative tissues undergoing fall hardening, winter freezing, and spring re-growth conditions using tissues provided by collaborator. Equipment for generation of precise temperature regimes is being installed allowing production of stressed and control tissues in house. Metabolic profiling experiments will be initiated upon completion of installation and testing of growth chambers.
An initial set of 70 samples have been received and are currently undergoing analyses by the Quality Analysis lab with data expected to be returned to collaborator in early – mid September. Additional samples will be submitted to the QA lab from the 2010 crop as grown by the collaborator. Monitoring was through informal telephone conversations and email exchanges.
