Research Project: ADAPTABILITY, FLAVONOID PROPERTIES AND VALUE ADDITION OF HIBISCUS SABDARIFFA

Location: Natural Products Utilization Research

2011 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Analysis of stilbenes in Hibiscus sabdariffa.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Southern University scientists will conduct Hibiscus accession trials and evaluations for their adaptability, quality and subsequently their flavonoid profile and antioxidant activities. Southern University will collaborate with ARS/Natural Plant Products Research Unit in analysis of stilbenes in Hibiscus calyces. Hibiscus calyces will be provided by the project director for analysis of stilbene-related compounds at the ARS facility using the laboratory protocol established by ARS scientist. Research technician/graduate student from Southern University will come to NPURU for training in sample preparation and analysis under the supervision of an ARS scientist. Once trained, Southern University scientists will be conduct sample preparation and analysis work in the research lab. at Southern University-Baton Rouge campus. Materials and supplies for the collaborative work will be supplemented by the project. Southern University will sponsor travel to Baton Rouge campus if further assistance is needed.

3.Progress Report

There has been no activity related to this project since June 2009. PI has not provided calyses of Hibiscus for analysis of stilbenes. PI has also planned to send a Research technician/graduate student to NPURU to learn methods of analysis of stilbenes; however this visit has not been scheduled. Collaborators have communicated through email and telephone concerning this project.
