Research Project:
EFFECTS OF WETLAND CONSERVATION PRACTICES ON SEDIMENTATION AND CARBON SEQUESTRATION
Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory
|
2011 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The goal of the study is to quantify soil sedimentation and erosion and the sequestration of soil organic carbon as these factors vary along the wetland alteration gradient.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
ARS will select 48 study sites in the Coastal Plains of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and/or North Carolina. Study sites will consist of 16 prior converted wetlands on croplands, 16 hydrologically restored wetlands, and 16 wetlands with native vegetation. The cooperator will travel to each site to assess soil characteristics and retrieve soil samples. The cooperator will work with ARS and other participants to analyze the data within the context of ecosystem service delivery.
3.Progress Report
Soil samples have been collected on the 48 wetland sites in the Mid Atlantic region. Soil profiles were characterized and bulk density estimates were established. Soil samples were analyzed for organic carbon and 137 Cs to assess redistribution of sediment and carbon resources within the ecosystems. Samples were prepared for phosphorus analysis. Progress on this project is being monitored by quarterly meetings with scientists and students involved in the project.
