To intrgress novel SCN-restantance genes into high-yielding soybean germplasm of early maturity groups (I, II and III) possessing resistance to other economically important disease with adequate agronimic performance.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Populations and lines will be developed using different sources of SCN resistance identified by ARS. The cross will be made between new sources or lines of SCN resistance and experimental elite ISU lines developed by Cooperator. Selections include greenhouses bioassays and marker assited breeding for SCN resistance and field evaluations for superior performance.
Introgression of novel genes conferring resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN) in soybean germplasm is a collaborative research project. Additional crosses were made for broadening resistance in soybean of early maturity groups (MG) primarily II and III which are adapted to the midwest area. Genetically diverse sources identified at ARS, Jackson, TN, worksite were used in the crosses. The diverse sources included PI438489B, PI22897 and PI567516C.
Resistance genes from diverse sources are transferred into two high yielding elite lines, A95-684043 and LD00-3309 from the midwest region. The elite lines are susceptible to SCN. Progenies were screened for resistance to appropriate nematode populations in the greenhouse. DNA markers tagged to nematode resistance were used to confirm resistance in the selected progenies. ADODR primarily monitored project activities through meetings, conference calls, emails and site visits.
