Research Project: ASIAN CITRUS PSYLLID ATTRACTANTS AND REPELLENTS

2009 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To discover and identify attractants and repellents of the Asian citrus psyllid with the ultimate goal of finding volatiles that could be used in a pest management program for the psyllid.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Volatiles from plants will be screened in the laboratory for attraction and repellency using y-tube olfactometers, four-arm olfactometers, wind tunnel assays, and EAG/EAD.


3.Progress Report

This project is related to Objective 3c: Investigate basic biology and ecology of the Asian citrus psyllid and its natural enemies in Florida citrus. The objective of the project is to find a volatile that is either attractive or repellent to the psyllid and is complementary to another project, 6618-22000-030-27N. PEPSICO (Pepsi Company) funded the purchase and installation of a second four-arm olfactometer; two four-source air delivery systems with humidification, vacuum regulation systems, all associated glassware and tubing, shelving, and lighting. The two systems are housed together in a large walk-in environmental chamber set at 28°C. Using the equipment, psyllids were found to be attracted to a guava essence from Givaudan Flavors Corporation. Research to identify the attractive constituent of the essence is being pursued.
