Research Project: ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES AT THE U.S. NATIONAL ARBORETUM

Location: Gardens Unit

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this collaboration is to collect and evaluate scientific data on the use of alternative energy technologies for systems that support the daily operations and mission of the U.S. National Arboretum through implementation of demonstration projects.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
ARS U.S. National Arboretum (USNA) will collaborate with faculty and students of Alfred State College to evaluate opportunities for demonstration of alternative energy sources and energy economy at the USNA campus, and will collect data to aid the evaluation of demonstrated technologies. Projects will be identified and the institutions will collaborate to design and implement demonstration projects over the next five years at the USNA. These projects will produce data helpful to the evaluation of energy economy technologies. The projects will also provide opportunities for training and demonstrate how energy economy technologies are developing to serve the needs of landscape maintenance systems.

3.Progress Report:

This agreement was established to collect and evaluate scientific data on the use of alternative energy technologies for systems that support the daily operations and mission of the U.S. National Arboretum through implementation of demonstration projects. Planning is underway for additional arrays on the buildings in the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum. Work will also be done to install energy saving equipment. Data will be collected to identify the energy capture of these facilities and cost savings on energy bills.
