1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Enhance soft white and club wheat germplasm for traits that reduce production risk in Northeast Oregon, and for milling and baking quality traits that enhance the value of soft white and club wheat in the export market.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Field trials of advanced breeding lines from the USDA-ARS wheat breeding project, located in Pullman, WA, will be established at four locations in NW Oregon. Those trials will be evaluated for agronomic characteristics, grain yield, and quality factors. In the greenhouse and laboratory, breeding lines will be evaluated for traits that are associated with enhanced production in hot, dry environments.
The problem is that the currently grown club wheat cultivars are too late in maturity for Oregon and are not competitive with other wheat cultivars being grown. The methods used are development of new breeding populations that are evaluated with using marker assisted selection, selection for resistance to soil borne disease and stripe rust, and multi location yield trials conducted at four locations in north eastern OR. The results are that four new breeding lines have been developed with better agronomic, disease, and quality characteristics that currently grown cultivars and these breeding lines were entered into the Oregon State University Cereal Variety Trials in the Fall of 2010. The results of this research will benefit wheat growers in Oregon by providing them with competitive cultivars in the club market class that will result in additional marketing opportunities for their wheat crop. This project is monitored through approximately four site visits per year.
