Research Project: PRODUCTION OF LOW AND HIGH TEMPERATURE BIOCHARS FROM CROP FEEDSTOCKS

Location: Coastal Plains Soil, Water, and Plant Research Center

Project Number: 6657-12000-005-04
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 15, 2008
End Date: Oct 31, 2010

Objective:
To pyrolysize different feedstocks producing biochars with distinct intrinsic characteristics.

Approach:
Biochar will be made from different crop feedstocks at two pyrolysis temperature ranges. The feedstocks will be pyrolyzed at a low (<300°C) and high (>500°C) temperatures to produce two distinct biochars. The biochars gross structural and surface chemical properties are predicted to act differently within soils and will therefore influence degraded soils dissimilarly. Our intention is to add biochars with dissimilar properties to improve soil fertility and physical properties at different soil profile depths.
