Project Title 1: We will evaluate six regional nurseries & all University of Illinois breeding lines in the misted, inoculated FHB field nursery. Approximately 2800 rows will be evaluated in the replicated FHB nursery. Grain spawn (corn kernels cultured with 6-10 FHB isolates) will be used to inoculate the nursery. Data will be collected on incidence, & severity. Grain samples will be harvested, & percentage of FDK will be determined by visual assessment compared to standards with known FDK. FHB & ISK indexes will be calculated. At least 1500 grain samples will be sent to the lab at the University of Minnesota for DON evaluation. Data & germplasm will be shared with other breeding programs across the region. Breeding lines from the University of Illinois program have regularly been among the most resistant lines in the northern soft wheat FHB nurseries. We will evaluate Illinois Variety Trial entries in the FHB nursery. Project Title 2: We will grow this experiment in our mist-irrigated, inoculated nursery so that the level of disease pressure should be severe. Many of the varieties & breeding lines included in this experiment are high yielding & are in commercial production. The three treatments applied to all of the varieties will be: no fungicide, Folicur® (tebuconazole), & Prosaro® (prothioconazole + tebuconazole). We will use a split-plot design with fungicide treatment as the main plots, & use four replications. We will also place buffer plots between fungicide treatments & thus further minimize undesirable effects due to spray drift. Six FHB susceptible varieties & six FHB resistant varieties or breeding lines will be included in the experiment. Plots will be six row yield plots with rows spaced 7 inches apart. Plots will be 14 feet in length & trimmed to 8 feet prior to harvest. The plots will be managed for high yield potential. A fungicide will also be applied to all of the plants at Feekes GS 8 to control foliar diseases & thus minimize confounding the yield effects due FHB control with effects of foliar diseases. Grain spawn (corn kernels cultured with FHB) will be used to inoculate the nursery which will be mist-irrigated during flowering. Data will be collected on incidence, severity & percent FDK, FHB & ISK indexes will be calculated, & a grain sample from each plot will be sent to the lab at the University of Minnesota for DON evaluation. This experiment should provide data to address the question if either current levels of genetic resistance or fungicide application are able to provide enough protection to minimize losses due to FHB under heavy disease pressure. This experiment will also provide data to determine if strong genetic resistance & fungicide application in combination can provide better protection from losses due to FHB than either provides alone. Project Title 3: Phenotypic data will be collected in field nurseries at Urbana in the ‘09&’10 field seasons & at Wooster in the 2010 field season (in cooperation with Clay Sneller). A misted, inoculated FHB field nursery will be used for evaluation of the RILs at both locations. Grain spawn be used to inoculate the nursery at both locations.
