DEMONSTRATION/ASSESSMENT OF ECOLOGICALLY BASED IPM OF MEDUSAHEAD/CHEATGRASS IN JORDAN VALLEY

The overall objective is to develop and implement a comprehensive, regional Ecologically-Based Invasive Plant Management (EBIPM) program to restore ecosystems threatened and dominated by cheatgrass/medusahead in Jordan Valley and the Great Basin.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Oregon State University (OSU) and USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists will cooperate on a project to demonstrate and assess the potential of using a one-pass system, prescribed grazing, and plateau application strategies (refer to project proposal for more detailed information) to rehabilitate annual-grass infested rangelands across heterogeneous landscapes in Jordan Valley, OR and the Great Basin. The goal of this project is to develop and implement a comprehensive, regional EBIPM program to restore ecosystems threatened and dominated by cheatgrass/ medusahead in the Jordan Valley watershed in the Great Basin which contributes directly to Subobjectives 1.1 and 1.2 of the Area-wide pest management project for annual grasses in the Great Basin.
Re-applications of 6 oz. of Plateau were made to each to the 5 demonstration plots in the Jordan Valley watershed in October 2009. Plots were also reseeded based on the results from the 2008 applications. An additional 160 inaccessible acres were sprayed in October 2009 by helicopter with 6 oz/ acre of Plateau for medusahead. Cheatgrass- inhibiting soil bacteria plots were established in February 2010 and a high density small plot seeding study was also established. Data for all plots were collected in June 2010 and is currently being processed.
Two field days were held in April and May 2010 to tour plots and increase awareness for EBIPM for the Jordan Valley High School botany class and also the Treasure Valley Community College Invasive Plant class.
