2009 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The overall objective is to develop and implement a comprehensive, regional Ecologically-Based Invasive Plant Management (EBIPM) program to restore ecosystems threatened and dominated by cheatgrass/medusahead in Jordan Valley and the Great Basin.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Oregon State University (OSU) and USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists will cooperate on a project to demonstrate and assess the potential of using a one-pass system, prescribed grazing, and plateau application strategies (refer to project proposal for more detailed information) to rehabilitate annual-grass infested rangelands across heterogeneous landscapes in Jordan Valley, OR and the Great Basin. 3.Progress Report

This demonstration study was initiated fall 2008. Treatments are (1) one-pass Plateau and seeding simultaneously, (2) Plateau only, (3) seeding only, and (4) non-seeded/no-Plateau control. Plateau was applied at 3.5 oz product per acre. An appropriate combination of crested wheatgrass and sandbergs bluegrass was seeded at 20 lbs/acre. In addition, approximately 190 acres were also treated with 6 oz product (Plateau) / acre as part of a weed prevention program in the fall of 2008. This fall (2009) we will re-apply the treatments to the large demonstration study. In addition, we will also apply herbicide to the steeper slopes (about 100 acres) surrounding the Jordan Valley via helicopter as part of the weed prevention program. ADODR monitored progress through meetings and telephone calls.
