COOPERATION BETWEEN USDA, ARS MANAGED NATIONAL PLANT GERMPLASM SYSTEM AND UKRAINE, NATIONAL CENTER FOR PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES
National Germplasm Resources
2013 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this cooperative research program is to maintain long-term collaboration in the collection, maintenance, evaluation, distribution, enhancement, utilization and preservation of cultivated and indigenous plant genetic resources.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Either party will develop project proposals that would support one or more of the above objective actions and present it to the other party for consideration as a collaborative project under this agreement. Specific approaches and methods of implementation of all selected projects, including funding arrangements will be agreed upon by both parties. Selected and funded projects will be implemented as planned.
Over the life of this project, activities under this agreement included negotiations for Prior Informed Consent to access plant genetic resources in Ukraine as per the Convention on Biological Diversity. This consent was in support of the 2008 collaborative Plant Exploration in the Crimea region of Ukraine for native Medicago (alfalfa) species. The collected germplasm and data was shared between cooperators and deposited in the germplasm systems of both countries.
