1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this agreement is to develop an enzymatic extraction procedure to preserve the prebiotic active structures in orange peel, conduct in vitro studies (with Bob Rastall) and to confirm prebiotic properties.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
ECONUGENICS will provide details on the enzymatic procedure to produce POS from citrus peel. ARS will develop an enzymatic extraction procedure for citrus peel POS that will be produced in the ERRC pilot plant and will perform in vitro prebiotic property analysis in collaboration with Bob Rastall.
Collaborated with CRADA partner to scale-up production of modified citrus pectin with immunomodulation and potential anti-cancer activity. Conducted a series of bench-scale tests to optimize conditions for enzymatic depolymerization of commercial citrus pectin at the 2 kg level and then up to 50 kg scale in the ERRC Pilot Plant with the assistance of CRADA partner scientists. This was the first production of modified citrus pectin by this company in the U.S. and will help them find a domestic manufacturing partner.
