1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Commercial scale-up and animal (swine) testing (feeding trial) of pectic oligosaccharides with prebiotic properties.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
ECONUGENICS will be responsible for obtaining at least 10 kg of POS. ARS (collaboration with Bob Rastall) will perform in vitro prebiotic property analysis. Once 10 kg of POS with in vitro prebiotic properties is delivered, ARS will perform a swine feeding trial to examine prebiotic properties in these animals.


3.Progress Report

To generate needed pectic oligosaccharides an enzymatic method is under development. Enzymatic production of arabinose-rich pectic oligosaccharides will use novel enzymes obtained from the Technical University of Denmark. Modified citrus pectin with unsaturated pectic oligosaccharides was reported to have immunostimulatory activity in vitro.
