1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Provide scientific and technical support in the collection, coding, and analysis of dietary data for the HANDLS study. The primary objective of Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span (HANDLS) is to create a representative 20-year longitudinal study of health status across the life span focused on investigating the differential influences of race and socioeconomic status on health in an urban population.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
1. FSRG shall provide the following components from its USDA Dietary Intake Data System:
a) The USDA Automated Multiple Pass Method instrument for collection of the 24- hour dietary recalls in HANDLS. Blaise licenses required for running the AMPM on laptops shall be the responsibility of the National Institute on Aging.
b) Electronic version of the AMPM Training Guide
c) Electronic version of the AMPM Interviewer Reference Manual
d) SurveyNet for computer-assisted coding of dietary intake data
e) The SurveyNet Coder Reference Manual
f) Post Interview Processing System
2. FSRG staff shall collaborate and participate in the HANDLS study by providing the following technical and scientific work:
a) Provide monthly technical consultation from scientists regarding system operations and quality assurance procedures and oversight.
b) Technical support for the processing of dietary recalls collected in HANDLS utilizing the USDA Post Interview Processing System for extraction of AMPM Blaise databases, reformatting AMPM data for SurveyNet, and autocoding of foods and portion sizes.
This agreement was initiated to provide scientific and technical support in the collection, coding, and analysis of dietary data for the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span: A 20-Year Longitudinal Study (HANDLS). The primary objective is to create a representative 20-year longitudinal study of health status across the life span investigating the differential influences of race and socioeconomic status on health in an urban population. The study is recruiting whites and African Americans 30-64 years old from Baltimore City, Maryland, in both low and high socioeconomic status. Data collection includes a baseline assessment and five follow-up triennial assessments over approximately 20 years. Anticipated attrition due to non-response, morbidity, and mortality requires an initial sample of approximately 4,000 participants.
HANDLS researchers were provided with the 2008 versions of the dietary recall instrument, the USDA Automated Multiple Pass Method, for collection of the 24-hour dietary recalls, the Post Interview Processing System for automated food coding, and the computer-assisted coding system, Survey Net, for manual coding and analysis of dietary intake data. FSRG scientists have provided technical expertise and guidance in dietary data quality assurance.
Monitoring activities for this project include bimonthly data review and transfer from the HANDLS Study to the University of Delaware by FSRG scientists, periodic conference calls, and meetings to address technical issues and training preparations.
