Physical, Chemical, and Adsorptive Properties of Ash/biochar from A Gasification System
Commodity Utilization Research
2013 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this research is to conduct chemical and physical analysis on the affects in water filtration of various qualities of ash/biochar from the gasification system.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Coaltec will provide various samples of ash/biochar to the USDA-ARS for analysis. These samples will be produced by varying fuel blends and operating parameters in the gasifier. The USDA-ARS will determine key physical and chemical properties of these samples.
Under this agreement, Coaltec was requested to provide several samples of ash/biochar from various gasifiers and produced under pre-defined gasification conditions, to the ARS scientists at the Southern Regional Research Center in New Orleans, LA, for analysis. This is a non-funded agreement; it was not possible to receive samples from Coaltec. Due to this fact, no additional progress was achieved. This agreement ended in February of 2013 and while no analysis were performed due to samples not being supplied, some of the objectives of the research under this agreement are being pursued under a new Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) which started this fiscal year. Under this CRADA, gasifier biochar samples are being received in our laboratory and their analysis has started.
