Research Project: MAPPING AND DEPLOYMENT OF QTL FOR WHEAT RESISTANCE TO FUSARIUM HEAD BLIGHT (FHB)

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The objectives of this cooperative research project are: using genomics tools to 1) identify new QTL for FHB resistance in Asian landraces and U.S. hard winter wheat germplasm from U.S. and.
2)transfer and pyramid QTL for FHB resistance from diverse sources to locally adapted cultivars using marker-assisted selection.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Use of high throughput molecular marker technologies to identify and isolate desirable genes/QTL from wheat germplasm materials collected from Asia and the southern Great Plains of the USA and to transfer and pyramid these QTL into adapted U.S. hard winter wheat cultivars using marker-assisted backcross to develop hard winter wheat cultivar/germplasm with improved resistance.


3.Progress Report

Fusarium head blight. (FHB) can significantly reduce grain yield and end-use quality of wheat. The Chinese wheat landrace Haiyanzhong (HYZ) shows a high level of resistance to FHB. We identified four genes for FHB resistance in HYZ with one gene showing a large effect on FHB resistance from chromosome 7D. DNA markers closely linked to the gene were identified. Four other genes having a smaller effect on FHB resistance were located on the short arms of chromosome 6B (two genes), 5A and 1A. HYZ carries different resistance genes from those identified in Chinese resistant cultivar Sumai 3 and adds genetic diversity to the Asian FHB resistance gene pool. This will be useful in breeding new resistant varieties.

A gene (Fhb1) conferring resistance to the disease resides on the short arm of chromosome 3B. This gene has shown the largest effect on reducing FHB development. Several molecular markers for the gene have been developed and used in breeding programs, but they only give good results in certain groups of breeding materials. A new single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) marker for Fhb1 was developed. This type of marker is suitable for high-throughput analysis and can reduce the cost and increase the speed of selection for resistance. The SNP marker will be useful for marker-assisted selection of Fhb1 in diverse wheat breeding programs.

Progress on this agreement is monitored by regularly discussing program goals, approaches, and results (on site) and by reviewing annual accomplishments reports.
