Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF FUNCTIONAL GENOMIC AND IMMUNOLOGIC APPROACHES TO CONTROL AVIAN MUCOSAL PATHOGENS

Location: Animal Parasitic Diseases

2010 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To evaluate the adjuvant effects of Seppic's immunomodulators in poultry immune system.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Broiler chickens will be treated with Seppic's immunomodulators and the effects on avian immune response to mucosal pathogens will be evaluated using established disease parameters and various immunological assays.

3.Progress Report

This trust agreement was established to develop molecular vaccines against avian coccidiosis and other enteric poultry pathogens. Due to the increasing regulations and bans on the use of anticoccidial drugs, alternative control strategies including recombinant protein, subunit, live-vector or DNA vaccination have been started for the control of avian coccidiosis. Particularly in the poultry industry, repeated immunizations are often necessary to generate a high level of immunity to the most common pathogens commonly encountered in commercial flocks. Studies were carried out to explore immunomodulatory effects of novel adjuvants. When combined with recombinant Eimeria antigens Montanideā„¢ adjuvants afforded significant protection against a high-dose, oral challenge infection with live sporulated E. acervulina oocysts. This report is the first to document the efficacy of Montanideā„¢ adjuvants in conjunction with the Eimeria recombinant antigen for vaccination against avian coccidiosis. Work progress is monitored by regular teleconferences, meetings and formal written progress reports.
