Research Project: EVALUATION OF ADVANCED USDA CITRUS SCION GERMPLASM

Location: Citrus and Other Subtropical Products Research

2009 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Screen novel citrus scion germplasm for unique fruit characteristics.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Fruit produced on citrus hybrids will be harvested at three times during the season to identify the maturity window for the particular selection. At the time of harvest data will be collected on fruit appearance (size, shape, presence of disease), rind color, ease of peeling, presence of seeds, soluble solids, total acidity, and taste (unacceptable, potentially acceptable, or acceptable). Scion selections identified worthy of further evaluation will be propagated onto commercial rootstocks for further evaluation.

3.Progress Report

This project is related to Objective 2 of this in-house project: Screen germplasm for important traits and select superior individuals. The objective of this research project is to provide the cooperator with detailed information on characteristics of promising new citrus scion hybrids and increase the number of selections available.

Fruit produced by advanced scion selections was harvested as appropriate and data on fruit quality characteristics were collected. Taste panel (both consumer and trained panelists) evaluation was conducted for two promising new hybrids. Commmercial growers were recruited to participate in early evaluation of scion selection USDA 1-62-122.

Progress was monitored by regluar meetings, phone calls, and email communication.
