Research Project: INVESTIGATION OF THE IMPACT OF ARUNDO DONAX IN MEXICO AND EVALUATION OF CANDIDATE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENTS

Location: Tick and Biting Fly Research

2010 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To investigate the environmental impact of the invasive weed Arundo donax, carrizo gigante, in Mexico, and to evaluate key candidate biological control agents.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Sites in Mexico with infestations of Arundo donax will be established to determine the impact of this invasive weed on the native flora and water resources.

3.Progress Report

This report documents the on-going collaboration with Mexico to rear, release, and evaluate the biological control agents of the invasive weed Arundo donax. Collaborators with the Instituto Mexicano Tecnologia del Agua have documented the impact of A. donax in the Rio Grande Basin, northern states of Mexico, and the lakes of the central highlands. The Arundo wasp was permitted and released in Mexico and is now established in the states of Morelos, Tamaulipas, and Nuevo Leon. Researchers at the Beneficial Insect Research Unit continue to monitor and evaluate the progress and impact of the wasp. The ADODR is in regular contact via email with cooperator.
