Research Project:
DEVELOPMENT OF ERIOPHYID MITES FOR BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF WEEDS
Location: Exotic and Invasive Weeds Research
|
2008 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop methods to use eriophyid mites for biological control of weeds.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
We will conduct research on the taxonomy, behavior and ecology of eriophyid mites associated with noxious weeds such as yellow starthistle and Russian thistle. Documents NFCA with U. of Bari, IT.
3.Progress Report
Progress was monitored periodically by phone and email, and by meeting with the cooperators in July. We conducted a field experiment in Italy to evaluate the host plant specificity and impact of the mite Aceria salsolae on Russian thistle. Experiments to evaluate host plant specificity of the mite Aceria solstitialis, a prospective biological control agent of yellow starthistle, were initiated in Bulgaria. Mites collected on Russian thistle, yellow starthistle, tall whitetop, Russian olive and saltcedar are being identified.
