Evaluate the progress that can be achieved in developing soybean germplasm with improved meal value utilizing perfect molecular markers.
1b.Approach (from AD-416)
1. Make crosses and develop initial populations segregating for tractable meal traits. 2. Use molecular markers to select desired genotypes. 3. Backcross selected genotypes and develop segregating populations. 4. Advance material identified with desired genotypes. 5. Evaluate meal trait phenotypes and agronimic characteristics of lines.
Research continued to investigate the ability to combine multiple genes important for soybean seed meal quality into a single soybean line. The project succeeded in development of independent lines with three or four of the desired alleles and in several lines that contained six of the desired seven genes in combination. When it was discovered that one of the desired alleles for the project was not present in our original breeding lines, we investigated the molecular genetic basis for the trait and discovered the mutations responsible so that molecular marker assays could be developed and utilized in the future. Efforts are now focused on retreiving the lost allele from a new breeding line and continuing the agronomic improvement of existing lines that contain multiple combinations of the desired alleles.
Monitoring activities included email exchange of information and results in quarterly reports, and participation in the United Soybean Board Soybean Seed Composition Workshop in February in St. Louis, Missouri.
