Identify genes controlling beta glucan content in oat.

Association mapping in elite varieties.
Data on oat beta glucan content was collected using our improved method for beta glucan evaluation. These data together with DNA marker data were used to associate genomic regions with beta glucan content. This information was used in a marker assisted selection breeding program to improve oat beta glucan content. Efficacy of selection based on DNA marker data was compared to selection based on phenotypic data alone. Varieties with superior beta glucan content were advanced. Progress was monitored with phone calls, emails, and discussions at professional meetings.
