2012 Annual Report
1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Develop strategies that promote cell proliferation and replacement in the bovine mammary gland, in order to increase lactational productivity and efficiency.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
We propose to accomplish the research objective by utilizing and extending current knowledge of mammary stem cell biology. Our specific aims are to manipulate mammary stem cell activity to enhance the growth of mammary epithelium and promote the replacement of senescent cells.
Experiments addressing Specific Aim #1 of the grant were completed and a manuscript is in preparation. A second experiment addressing the impact of inosine treatment during the dry period (Specific Aim #3) is in progress. In addition to the stated objectives of the grant, another experiment using an in vitro approach to evaluate the impact of xanthosine on mammary stem cells was performed and confirms the ability of xanthosine to promote expansion of the mammary stem cell population. A manuscript describing this work was published.
