Research Project: GENETIC BASIS OF CYPRINID HERPES VIRUS-3 RESISTANCE IN COMMON CARP

Location: Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture Research

2008 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
To identify genes associated with viral disease resistance in Carp.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Candidate immune response genes will be added on to a genetic linkage map that will contain QTL for viral disease resistance in carp.

3.Progress Report

Carp industries have recently suffered enormous economic damage due to a viral disease caused by Cyprinid herpes virus 3 (CyHV-3). Mapping and identification of candidate genes for viral disease resistance in carp will provide insight to the underlying mechanisms of viral resistance in cool and cold water aquaculture species. In FY08 NCCCWA scientists began to identify and clone candidate genes for immune response in carp for genetic mapping and testing for association and linkage with viral disease resistance. The ADODR is in frequent contact with the cooperator through phone calls, email, and annual site visits in addition to receipt of written reports.
