Research Project: COOPERATIVE WORK WITH OSU ON REGIONAL AND EXTENSION WHEAT NURSERIES

Location: Wooster, Ohio

2012 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
Evaluation of wheat quality in entries from the regional wheat nurseries of the eastern U.S. in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Evaluation of early crop samples prior to fall planting decisions.

1b.Approach (from AD-416):
Evaluation of regional wheat nurseries of the eastern U.S. in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Within each year grain samples will be received at the SWQL from regional nursery coordinators and evaluated at the laboratory by Ohio State University technicians using standard American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) methods for grain milling and flour evaluation. Quality evaluations will be submitted to staff at the SWQL for summary and delivery to the cooperators before the end of the calendar year in which they are submitted. Nurseries include the Eastern Uniform Soft Winter Wheat Performance Nursery, the Southern Regional Performance Nursery, the Gulf and Western Nursery, the Eastern Soft White Winter Wheat Nursery. Summaries of information will be posted on the web by SWQL for use by researchers and the public. Evaluation of early crop samples prior to fall planting decisions. Agronomists with Ohio State University will submit samples in July of each year for wheat quality evaluation. Quality evaluations will be submitted to staff at the SWQL for summary and delivery to the cooperators before the end of August in the calendar year in which they are submitted.

3.Progress Report:

This project terminated 6/30/12 and was replaced with 3607-43440-007-01S. This project achieved its objective in providing timely wheat quality data for regional nurseries grown by researchers in the eastern US. The Ohio State University staff working within the Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory produced quality data for the Uniform Eastern Soft White Winter Wheat Nursery, the Uniform Southern Nursery of soft red winter wheat, the Mason-Dixon Regional Nursery of soft red winter wheat, and the Gulf and Western Regional Nursery of soft red winter wheat, the Southern Uniform Fusarium Head Blight Regional Nursery, and the Northern Regional Winter Wheat Scab Nursery. The Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory/Ohio State University, evaluations of the breeding lines in these nurseries are typically the last evaluation prior to release of new cultivars. Therefore, they are integral to the release process by breeders in the Eastern United States. The regional nurseries are the best quality comparison among breeding lines being considered for release and serve as the baseline for judging the adequacy of quality prior to release of new breeding lines. This project addressed a portion of Objective 4 of the parent project: Evaluation of wheat breeding and extension samples.
