Research Project: COOPERATIVE WORK WITH OSU ON REGIONAL AND EXTENSION WHEAT NURSERIES
2010 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Evaluation of wheat quality in entries from the regional wheat nurseries of the eastern U.S. in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Evaluation of early crop samples prior to fall planting decisions.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Evaluation of regional wheat nurseries of the eastern U.S. in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Within each year grain samples will be received at the SWQL from regional nursery coordinators and evaluated at the laboratory by Ohio State University technicians using standard American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) methods for grain milling and flour evaluation. Quality evaluations will be submitted to staff at the SWQL for summary and delivery to the cooperators before the end of the calendar year in which they are submitted. Nurseries include the Eastern Uniform Soft Winter Wheat Performance Nursery, the Southern Regional Performance Nursery, the Gulf and Western Nursery, the Eastern Soft White Winter Wheat Nursery. Summaries of information will be posted on the web by SWQL for use by researchers and the public. Evaluation of early crop samples prior to fall planting decisions. Agronomists with Ohio State University will submit samples in July of each year for wheat quality evaluation. Quality evaluations will be submitted to staff at the SWQL for summary and delivery to the cooperators before the end of August in the calendar year in which they are submitted.

3.Progress Report

Quality data was produced for the following regional nurseries in 2009: the Uniform Southern Winter Wheat Nursery, the Uniform Eastern Winter Wheat Nursery, the Gulf-Atlantic Wheat Nursery, the Mason-Dixon Winter Wheat Nursery, the Uniform Eastern White Wheat Trial, the Northern Uniform Winter Wheat Scab Nursery, and the Southern Uniform Winter Wheat Scab Nursery. All results were posted to the USDA websites at: http://www.ars.usda.gov/News/News.htm?modecode=36-07-05-00. Uniform Southern and Uniform Eastern Winter Wheat Nurseries were included in reports to the nursery coordinator and those results were publicized at: http://www.ars.usda.gov/main/docs.htm?docid=2925. The two Fusarium head blight nurseries (Scab) were publicized to the research community through the US Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative website at: www.scabusa.org. The agreement was monitored on a daily basis by the ADODR through review and discussions with OSU employees funded by the agreement. Weekly progress reports were oral presented during staff meetings. Quarterly progress was reviewed with OSU faculty supervising the project through in-person meetings.
