Collaboratively explore joint efforts for research projects and coordinate research activities of mutual interest.


3.Progress Report

This report serves to document activities and research carried out under the MOU between ARS and AAFC-Research Branch (RB). AAFC-RB is a partner in PROCINORTE, a trilateral research coordinating group of the US, Canada and Mexico hosted by the International Institute for Cooperative Agriculture (IICA). Current task forces in operation are animal health, genetic resources, tropical fruits and library science. Bilateral science and research cooperation is well established between USDA/ARS and AAFC-RB. In FY2009, ARS researchers reported the following formal and informal research topics:.
1)Identification, classification, and cataloging of spider mites and aphids;.
2)Baculovirus host range and virulence for improved bio-insecticides;.
3)Effect of forage grass cutting and nutrient utilization;.
4)Fate of phosphorus in organic and non-organic systems;.
5)Developing a harmonic radar system for tracking orchard pest movements;.
6)Anti-inflammatory effects of avenanthramides;.
7)Oat DNA markers for genetics and breeding; .
8)Soybean response to the white mold pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum;.
9)Genetics of trichothecene production of F. graminearum and two 2ndary mycotoxin biosynthetic gene pathways; 10) Maize with resistance to Fusarium and Gibberella ear rot and associated mycotoxins; 11) Systematics, population genetics and plant pathology of fungi of importance to food safety & security; 12) Molecular and phenotype analyses of F. graminearum; 13) Fusarium head blight (FHB) population genetics; 14) seed/seedling dynamics of common lambsquarters in response to microclimatic stimuli; 15) Verticillium genetics; 16) Website database for Pythium spp.; 17) microarrays for Phytophthora spp. Identification/detection; 18) testing of AAFC-RB iceberg breeding lines for bolting resistance; 19) iceberg breeding and other lettuce populations sent to Canada for bacterial leaf spot resistance testing; 20) Site-specific recombination to remove antibiotic resistance gene from transgenic peach and pear; 21) Tick genetics and the potential for vector-borne transmission of A. marginale in Canada; 22) Pathogenicity of plant-parasitic nematodes to blueberry in the Pacific Northwest; 23) Second generation animal database to manage collections of animal genetic resources; 24) Participation in the hard winter wheat regional program; 25) Distribution of genetic diversity in Lygus lineolaris and developing a molecular phylogeny for the tarnished plant bug; 25) Spinach production and the analyses of leaf tissue for chloroplast associated human bioactive compounds grown under sub-arctic conditions; and 26) Characterization of tomato chlorotic dwarf viroid.
