2008 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Assemble and analyze a public genetic database for soybeans and wheat. Through collaborative efforts, the potential value of these crops will be explored. Support breeders by improving near infrared and gas chromatographic methods for rapid analyses of soybean composition and soybean oil, increase accuracy and precision of analyses and report results rapidly to customers. Reestablish collaboration with the University of Illinois and Purdue University.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Using new wet chemical methods, improved near infrared calibrations will be performed and compared to calibrations by other NIR users. A wider range of soybean composition will be worked into the calibration. Soxhlet and nitrogen analyses from newly obtained equipment will be used in the calibration. Carbohydrate analyses will be performed on a large number of soybean samples and added to the current calibration.

3.Progress Report
Continual calibration of near infrared (NIR) methods and the use of routine standards has improved the quality of analysis generated for thousands of samples provided by breeders. Congressionally-mandated Specific Cooperative Agreements (SCAs) with the University of Illinois and Purdue University for improving soybean and wheat genetics were renewed in July, 2008, and there is no progress to report under these new SCA projects during this short time frame. NIR calibrations were developed for the determination of phytochemicals in ground mint plant material and this calibration has been used to support work in project 3620-41000-125-00D, "Characterization, Production and Utilization of Phytochemicals from Agricultural Products." This research addresses NP-306, Component 1.

1. PROVIDED ANALYTICAL SUPPORT FOR BREEDERS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. Soybean breeders are dependent on rapid, standardized and accurate chemical properties to guide their breeding efforts. Oil, protein and moisture content determinations (30,601 soybean samples by near infrared), as well as fatty acid profiles (15,089 samples), were performed and the compiled data was published in the annual United States Department of Agriculture publication, “Coordinated Soybean Analysis.” All of this data has been provided to breeders throughout the United States, where this information is critical to the development of improved soybean varieties. The research addresses NP-306, Component 1, Problem Area 1b.
