Objective:
To evaluate whether PrP knock-out cattle are susceptible or resistant to prion diseases.

Approach:
Evaluation of the resistance of PrP knock-out cattle to prion disease will involve in vivo studies conducted individually and jointly by ARS and cooperator. The studies will involve the preparation of PrP knock-out cattle and normal controls, inoculation of knock-out and normal cattle with Transmissible Mink Encephalopathy (TME); housing of cattle in biocontainment facilities; observation, euthanasia, and necropsy of cattle; collection and testing of samples from cattle for the presence of PrP**SC; and analysis of data.
