Location: Cotton Ginning Research

Project Number: 6235-41000-007-10
Project Type: Contract

Start Date: Oct 01, 2004
End Date: Sep 30, 2009

Objective:
To determine the interactions of roller and saw ginning with varieties that are known to have fragile seed coats.

Approach:
ARS will gin a cotton variety that is known to have a fragile seed coat. The ginning operations will include conventional and experimental machines. Fiber and textile processing analyses will be conducted by Cotton Incorporated. ARS will investigate new or improved methods that evaluate the size and strength of cottonseed, and the strength of attachment between fiber and cottonseed. A prototype instrument that evaluates the mechanical characteristics of cottonseed will be provided by Cotton Incorporated.
