2008 Annual Report


1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Objective 1: Discover new, natural product-based antifungal agents for use in disease control. Objective 2: Conduct small-scale efficacy studies and limited mode of action studies of lead compounds for use as new plant protectants for small fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants.


1b.Approach (from AD-416)
The CRIS research will focus in novel plant-derived fungicides for control of important minor crop pathogens. These compounds will be (1) tested in in vitro assays and on plants for efficacy as plant protectants and (2) evaluated for potential to prevent decay in fruits.


3.Progress Report
1. Finalized work on novel assay for studying the effects of sampangine fungicides on the germination and morphology of selected plant pathogenic fungi. This research fulfills major components of the NP 306 missions for U.S. agriculture. Quality Characterization, Preservation, and Enhancement are addressed through the discovery and development of environmentally friendly strategies for plant and animal pathogen control. 2. Life-Pharms project: To date > 6,000 samples have been processed for antifungal evaluation. This year (2007-08) there has been a significant decrease in the number of samples coming from Life-Pharms and work is proceeding to finalize this project. One peer-review paper resulted from this collaborative research effort. This research fulfills major components of the NP 306 missions for U.S. agriculture. Quality Characterization, Preservation, and Enhancement are addressed through the discovery and development of environmentally friendly strategies for plant and animal pathogen control.

3. Research involvement in Deployed War-Fighter Protection (DWFP) Program began in 2007 and continued to expand in 2008 as NPURU increased it’s output of extracts and pure compounds to other ARS labs in this program. One Invention Disclosure for mosquito deterrent activity is in progress. This research fulfills major components of the NP 306 missions for U.S. agriculture. Quality Characterization, Preservation, and Enhancement are addressed through the discovery and development of environmentally friendly strategies for plant and animal pathogen control (NP 306) and veterinary, medical, and urban entomology (NP 104).
