Research Project: USE OF STARCH AND AGRICULTURAL FIBER IN CLEANING AIDS, CHARCOAL AND CAT LITTER

Location: Bioproduct Chemistry and Engineering Research

2008 Annual Report

1a.Objectives (from AD-416)
Add value to farm products.

1b.Approach (from AD-416)
Material design and engineering of single-use biobased consumer products. Documents CRADA with Clorox. Log 25541. Formerly 5325-41000-039-05T (1/05).

3.Progress Report

CRADA research on this project continues to be milti-faceted, with projects including (1) charcoal, (2) kitty litter, (3) cleaning agents (including nanocomposite applications), and (4)non-woven cleaning aids. New biomaterials have been tested and improved. Communication between ARS researchers and research teams from Clorox continues via face-to-face meetings, teleconferences, stakeholders' workshops (at which Clorox have been very active), and scientific meetings, such as the American Chemical Soc. meeting. At least 4 patents have been filed related to this work, as outlined in the Annual Report for the main CRIS Project, 5325-41000-044-00D.

The ADODR monitors progress through frequent meetings, teleconference, e-mails and written reports.

This research aligns with NP 306 - Quality and Utilization of Agricultural Products: Component II. (d) New and Improved Processes and Feedstocks.
