Research Project: PREDICTING AND VALIDATING RAIN INFILTRATION AND SUBSURFACE FLOW FOR "REAL WORLD" SOIL AND SLOPE CONDITIONS

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit

2004 Annual Report

4.What were the most significant accomplishments this past year?
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and the University of Mississippi School of Engineering (Dr. S. N. Prasad) and is part of the parent CRIS 6408-12130-012-00D, Processes, Control, and Prediction of Erosion and Runoff on Upland Areas in Agricultural Watersheds.

The experimental phase of laboratory studies involving rainfall simulations on soil columns and soil beds in a tilted flume were completed. Column studies were designed to evaluate derived infiltration relationships for fixed and derived crusts based on the spectral series solutions of the Richard's equation. Flume studies were designed to evaluate subsurface flow regimes and seepage flow for different rainfall intensity regimes and slope steepnesses. Data analysis phase is to be initiated.
