National Program Review, February 2003: Ants and Termites
headline bar
Summary

A National Program Review devoted to ARS research on fire ants and Formosan subterranean termites was held at New Orleans, February 11 - 12, 2003. National Program Reviews are held for each specialty every five years, at the beginning of its planning cycle (Office of Scientific Quality Review). The reviews give ARS personnel an opportunity to formally summarize their progress to stakeholders and to solicit stakeholder advice on relevant directions for future research. There were approximately 50 invited participants, including major stakeholders from the pest control industry, farmers unions, the US Environmental Protection Agency, homeowners associations, municipality officials and university partners. Stakeholders presented their needs and perspectives during the morning, followed by concise status reports from the Formosan Subterranean Termite Research Unit (New Orleans, LA), the Biological Control of Pests Research Unit (Stoneville, MS) and the Fire Ant Research Unit (Gainesville, FL). The day was concluded with meetings by breakout groups, which had the responsibility for recommending goals for future ARS research.  A great deal has been accomplished in the fire ant and termite projects over the last five years and the stakeholders were especially concerned with maintaining momentum by exploiting discoveries and adapting them to new uses.  For fire ant research, they reached consensus on six top priority goals:

  • develop better monitoring, inspection or detection methods
  • more attention to application technology, such as species specific baits and repellents
  • expand the area-wide fire ant control program to all Gulf states
  • continue biological control efforts with parasitic flies and microbial pathogens
  • increase the pace of technology transfer, especially for integrated pest management
  • increase systematic evaluations of the economic and ecological effects of fire ants
There was also considerable interest from the pest control industry and the extension representatives for increased research on other pest ants and safe suppression in special situations, such as nursing homes. For termite research the following were the top research priorities:
  • develop improved systems for the nondestructive detection of colonies, possibly utilizing infrared radiometry, acoustic detection, or motion detection, to allow localized control.
  • develop improved delivery technology, such as baits
  • increase studies on basic biology and behavior to better understand aspects crucial to better control, such as colony formation and identity of attractants continue and intensify the area-wide control program being conducted in the French Quarter improve methods for assessing - both biologically and economically - area-wide control
  • review and revise training given to pest management professionals to insure efficacy
The consultive group was concerned not only with the continued development of new control tools but with the implementation of these tools effectively, highlighting a perennial challenge. In the Congressionally funded French Quarter Project they suggested revisions to how the commercial pest control operators were trained, how success economic impact are measured, and how lessons learned can be moved to other areas dissimilar to the historic district. The group advised not to continue the search for exotic biological control agents unless additional money was available. We much appreciate the participation of those who sacrificed their time and money to attend our program review. Their comments, summarized above, will be crucial in maintaining the viability of the fire ant and Formosan subterranean termite research projects.
