Biosecurity Engagement Program Projects

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP) projects, funded by the US Departments of State and Defense, address disease problems abroad that threaten the US. The idea is that by helping other nations deal with serious pathogens within their borders, the US will understand how to prevent these pathogens from entering and attacking the US.

State Department BEP Projects

Kenya- Immunological control of Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV) in African ruminants. ARS-Arthropod-borne Animal Diseases Research Unit (ABADRU), Manhattan, KS and the Kenyan Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), Nairobi, Kenya

Kenya- Control of Mosquitoes responsible for transmitting Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV), ARS-Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology (CMAVE), Gainesville, FL and the Kenyan Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Nairobi, Kenya

South Africa- Antigenic Structure of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) virus capsid proteins and the selection of appropriate candidate vaccine strains in emerging FMD outbreaks.

Defense Department CBEP Projects

Uganda-

Research and Development of Countermeasures to Support the Surveillance and Control of FMD virus in Uganda; and development of a new platform for production of termostable and inexpensive diagnostics
