Research at the Poultry Research Unit

The Poultry Research Unit's work improves the health of poultry and enhances the efficiency of production in areas such as nutrition and housing. Such improvements cuts the cost of poultry production and helps keep the cost of chicken an d other poultry products lowers for consumers.

For example, Researchers at the ARS Poultry Research Unit developed the CPJ Vaccinator to protect laying flocks from serious diseases like infectious bronchitis, mycoplasmosis and exotic Newcastle dis-ease. Each year, mycoplasmosis alone costs U.S. producers more than $140 million, partly due to uneven vaccine delivery. The vaccinator dispenses vaccine so uniformly that it reaches more than 90 percent of the birds to be treated.
