James Mahan is a research plant physiologist with the Plant Stress and Water Conservation Laboratory of the UDSA/ARS in Lubbock TX. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Master and Ph.D. degrees in plant physiology from Texas A&M University.

During his 30+ year research career with the ARS, his research has been focused on the relationship between the thermal dependence of metabolism and the plant’s environment. Plant temperature, environmental parameters and plant water status are particular areas of interest.

The focus of his program has been translation of basic biology to field-level crop performance with the goal of implementation of research findings into production agriculture as rapidly as possible.

He has published the requisite number of papers (n+1) and holds 2 US patents relating to stress detection and management. The patents have been commercialized.

Mahan’s current interests are: big data analytics, field scale thermal imaging, environmental aspects of plant stress and mitigation, machine learning and pattern recognition, and rainfed agricultural production.
