Mike Reding’s research develops methods to reduce crop losses and damage caused by insect pests of ornamental nursery crops and other horticultural crops; and develops improved detection methods and sustainable alternatives to current management strategies.  Specific research objectives are: 1) fill gaps in the knowledge of fundamental biology and ecology of ambrosia beetles in relation to the nursery ecosystem, 2) identify and exploit vulnerabilities in biology and ecology of ambrosia beetles to develop improved, novel, and sustainable strategies for managing these pests, 3) develop new methods for detecting nursery pests and models for predicting their activity; 4) develop environmentally-friendly alternatives to conventional insecticides for managing nursery pests, and new techniques for applying chemical controls of nursery pests.  Research includes development of attractants and detection techniques, monitoring seasonal activity of pests, and development of models for predicting pest activity; testing efficacy of conventional and alternative control agents; characterize the relationship between host health, susceptibility, and efficacy of controls.  Field and complimentary laboratory experiments are conducted to meet these goals.
