Current Research Projects:

The overall objectives of Dr. Albano’s research is to develop basic and applied knowledge through independent and collaborative research on improved management practices and production systems for reducing nutrient and agrichemical contamination of water resources; developing and incorporating novel water treatment technologies to contend with contaminated runoff water; utilization of byproducts of such systems as value-added feedstock for use in crop production; and creating more environmentally friendly fertilizers. Specific objectives are to investigate the interactions of plants, substrates, water treatment systems, and production practices as they relate to sustainable production as influenced by the nutrient release rate and formulation of fertilizers; water and nutrient holding capacities of substrates; water and nutrient requirements of crops; irrigation water quality; plant and substrate chemical and physical properties; environmental conditions; and plant species. Of particular significance are studies on developing algal-based potting substrates that conform to industry standards (Fig. 1), and the identification and testing of “green” biodegradable aminopolycarboxylic acid (APCA) complexones as micronutrient metal chelating agents (Fig. 2).


Solutions Color Differences

Results from the research will provide new knowledge on nutrient and water management. Team research will lead to modifications of existing cropping systems that address all aspects of fertilization, substrates, irrigation, and degraded water remediation. Practical outcomes from research results will be transferred to industry to ensure safe, sustainable, environmentally compatible, and profitable production of horticultural commodities. Successful achievement of research objectives will impact water resource management, ecology, horticulture, plant physiology, and soil science. Significant progress will reduce groundwater and surface water contamination; provide growers with site-specific prescription control measures for water treatment and crop production; and improve fertilizers and potting substrates.
