B.S. in Chemistry from Western Illinois University

Dr. Compton received his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Illinois where he focused on the synthesis and characterization of organometallic polymers. The novel family of iron-sulfur based polymers he developed possessed unique electrical properties and were tested for use in semiconductor applications. His postdoctoral research in Biochemistry at the University of Illinois Biochemistry involved studying the phosphorylation cascade and the two-component signaling transduction pathway of the bacteria Bacillus subtilis. He expressed and isolated key proteins in the signaling pathway and studied protein interactions. For the past 20+ years, Dr. Compton has worked at the National Center of Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR) in Peoria, IL where his work has focused on the development of enzymatic routes to unique bio-based products using vegetable oils. He has developed patented vegetable-oil based products and helped design the modular bioreactor used to manufacture the bio-based products. More recently, he has been involved in research to convert agricultural biomass to industrial, non-fuel products.
