Major Accomplishments:

Ø  First to produce zein fibers that have been chemically modified before spinning to provide fibers with improved resistance to solvents and improved physical properties.  

 

Ø  Carried out first experiments on cross-linking zein in the melt state both in batch and reactive extrusion processes.  The resulting zein articles had improved physical properties and were resistant to dissolution by normal solvents that would dissolve zein. 

 

Ø  Awarded competitive grants ($325,000) to perform research for the Illinois Corn Marketing Board in 2005-2007. 

 

Ø  After developing an improved understanding of how spandex degrades on exposure to chlorinated water, developed a new antioxidant package to deliver improved chorine durability in the billion dollar swimwear market.  Led the commercialization efforts in Europe, N. America, S. America and Asia.  Patent protection obtained globally.

 

Ø  Found novel method to improve the heat-set efficiency of a spandex fiber.  The incumbent synthesized new polyurea-urethane-ether polymers that will maintain an imposed deformation at lower temperatures than incumbent fibers. Incumbent selected new monomers, synthesized new polymers and spun fiber.  Patent protection obtained.

 

Ø  Developed technology to provide spandex polymer solutions that have up to 40% higher polymer solids which allowed production of higher productivity processes.  Patent protection obtained.

 

Additional Relevant Information:

Ø  Served as liaison between E.I. DuPont with Ciba Geigy, Cytec, Great lakes Chemical Clariant and other divisions within DuPont.  Partnerships formally developed with Ciba-Geigy and Cytec resulting in the evaluation of numerous research materials.  Led efforts with Clariant that resulted in use of Hostanox® 03 in spandex providing the highest level of chlorine durability.  Provided guidance and technical direction to six research chemists at multiple locations as lead chemist for Spandex Additives Research.

 

Ø  Successfully led commercialized products or performed lengthy plant tests at many global locations – Waynesboro, VA; Monterrey Mexico; Paulinia, Brazil; Mercedes, Argentina; Dordrecht, The Netherlands; Maydown, N. Ireland; Singapore; Shanghai, China.  During these tests, was responsible for supporting million dollar plant tests, prepared all test documentation, coordinated production and testing and oversaw production on daily basis by working with local managers, engineers, and operators.

Ø  Carried out research to support technical marketing in resolution of trade problems.  Required rapid development of hypotheses, testing protocols and product development.  Numerous visits to domestic and international customers were required.
