2003 Rangeland Grasshopper Hazard Map

2003 Rangeland Grasshopper Hazard Map

Top

The map shows the predicted extent of the grasshopper problem in the western United States in 2003, based on surveys during late-season 2002. More than eight grasshoppers per square yard (orange and red areas on the map) indicate significant areas of infestation. If the grasshoppers are economically damaging, these areas may require treatments in 2003. However, because some species do not threaten rangeland or crops, land managers cannot rely solely on density maps to determine which areas to treat.

This map was adapted for the web from one prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

In 2002, Congress provided APHIS $3.6 million to conduct surveys and provide technical assistance to federal, state and private landowners for chemical treatments of grasshopper infestations on rangeland. USDA funds cover all treatment costs on federal land and cost-sharing programs on state and private rangeland. Still, farmers themselves have to pay for spraying and the damage done by the pests on private cropland.
