Beltsville
Scientist Wins Regional Award
By David Elstein
February 13, 2002 BELTSVILLE, Md., Feb. 13 --
Agricultural Research Service geneticist
Tad S. Sonstegard was honored as the agency's "Beltsville Area Early
Career Research Scientist of the Year" in a ceremony Feb. 13 at the
Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural
Research Center. ARS is the U.S. Department
of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency.
Sonstegard's research has focused on characterizing the bovine (cattle)
genome and identifying genes with economic and biological importance for
improving livestock production, specifically reproduction and lactation. His
research has led to several major contributions in livestock genome science,
including the development of the most extensive genetic "blueprint"
for the bovine udder.
In addition to his work in the lab, Sonstegard has found time to be a mentor
to students interested in science at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in
Greenbelt, Md.
Sonstegard has been with ARS since he received his Ph.D. from the
University of
Minnesota in 1995. He worked for two years at the
U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in
Clay Center, Neb., before coming to the
Gene Evaluation and
Mapping Laboratory in Beltsville. Sonstegard has received three USDA
Outstanding Performance Awards and two USDA Certificates of Merit.
